Algorithmic Subjects: E-Literature Performance and the "Hidden" Archive

In three case studies, Berens attends to how "digital detritus," the byproducts of live performances in networked art, leaves algorithmic traces that influence reception of the art well after the installation is over.  In the controversial Netprov "Occupy MLA" (2011-2013); in Nick Montfort's generated landscape poem "Taroko Gorge" (2009) and its 25 remixes; and in the rocky reception of electronic literature's first hypertext, Judy Malloy's "Uncle Roger" (1986), Berens examines how algorithms are not neutral machinic operations, but "performances" that enact a host of external interests: corporate, social, ethical.

Profesor Kathi Inman Berens wykłada w Annenberg School of Communication (University of Southern California), zajmuje się m.in. humanistyką cyfrową oraz literaturą elektroniczną. Ma znaczące doświadczenie w zakresie kuratorstwa e-literatury i sztuki nowych mediów: w 2012 roku była kuratorką prac literatury mobilnej i lokacyjnej w ramach Modern Language Association Convention („Electronic Literature Exhibit"), była także współkuratorką pierwszej prezentacji literatury elektronicznej w Bibliotece Kongresu USA w kwietniu 2013 roku, a także wystawy zorganizowanej w ramach międzynarodowej konferencji Electronic Literature Organisation w Milwaukee w 2014 roku. Zajmowała się projektowaniem aplikacji w Mobile Technology Research Initiative Washington State University w Vancouver (Kanada) Jest także autorką generatora poezji „Tournedo Gorge" (java_script) .
