Dziedzictwo kulturowe nie jest zjawiskiem ani hermetycznym, ani operującym na stałych, skończonych zasobach, które łatwo można zdefiniować. Ponadto, w zależności od dyscypliny naukowej, jest ono inaczej interpretowane i badane. Dzięki współczesnym instytucjom kultury i nowym mediom, dziedzictwo przedostaje się do świadomości szerokiego grona odbiorców.
